Wanneer moet je GEEN matcha drinken?

When Should You NOT Drink Matcha?

Most matcha guidance focuses on when to drink it. Less attention goes to when not to — which is often more useful, particularly for people new to it or experiencing unwanted effects.

Late afternoon and evening

Matcha contains 30–70mg of caffeine per serving. Caffeine's half-life in the body is approximately five to six hours — a cup at 4pm still has half its caffeine active around 9–10pm. If you are drinking matcha and experiencing poor sleep, this is the first thing to examine. The L-theanine moderates some of the stimulant effect but does not eliminate the caffeine. A reasonable cutoff for most people is 1–2pm.

On a completely empty stomach

Some people experience nausea or stomach discomfort when drinking matcha without any food. A small snack first — a few crackers, a piece of fruit — usually resolves it.

If you are pregnant or trying to conceive

Caffeine recommendations during pregnancy are typically 200mg daily maximum. One to two cups of matcha may be within safe limits, but discuss with your doctor, particularly in the first trimester.

With iron-rich meals

Catechins inhibit non-haem iron absorption. If managing low iron or eating plant-based, avoid drinking matcha with or immediately after iron-rich meals.

When you are very anxious

L-theanine moderates caffeine's anxiogenic effects, but for people managing significant anxiety, even moderated caffeine can be counterproductive. Some do better switching to hojicha — very low caffeine — or having matcha only at calmer times.
