The Complete Matcha Tool Kit: What You Need and What You Don't

The Complete Matcha Tool Kit: What You Need and What You Don't

The matcha tool market can make preparation seem more complicated and equipment-heavy than it is. In reality, excellent matcha requires only a few items.

Essential: the chasen (bamboo whisk)

This is the one non-negotiable tool. A chasen creates the foam that defines well-made matcha and ensures the powder dissolves properly. The number of tines matters: 80-tine for standard use, 100 or 120-tine for a finer, more consistent foam. A fork or regular kitchen whisk does not work well — the geometry is wrong for the motion required.

Essential: a fine-mesh sieve

Matcha clumps in storage. Sifting it through a fine-mesh sieve before adding water takes ten seconds and ensures even dissolution. A small tea strainer works perfectly — no dedicated matcha sifter required.

Essential: a suitable bowl

You need a wide, deep bowl in which to whisk. A chawan is traditional, but any wide ceramic bowl or cup that allows vigorous whisking works. A small teacup is too narrow.

Useful: temperature-controlled kettle

Getting water to 70–80°C is easier with a variable-temperature kettle. A regular kettle plus a thermometer, or boiling and resting for five minutes, are functional alternatives.

Useful: chasen holder

Extends the life of the whisk by maintaining its shape. Worth having for daily users. Small investment, meaningful impact on chasen longevity.

Useful: chashaku (bamboo scoop)

The traditional measuring tool — two scoops equals approximately 1.5g. Pleasant to use and part of the ritual, but a kitchen scale is equally functional.

Not necessary

  • A dedicated matcha tin if your powder comes in a good airtight container
  • An electric frother (useful for lattes, not for traditional preparation)
  • A full ceremonial set if you are making practical home matcha rather than performing the ceremony
