Matcha and Iron Absorption: What You Need to Know
Tea has long been known to affect iron absorption. Because matcha involves consuming the whole ground leaf rather than a brewed infusion, understanding this interaction is particularly relevant for regular matcha drinkers.
The mechanism
Matcha is rich in catechins — particularly EGCG — which are polyphenols that bind to non-haem iron (from plant foods and fortified products) in the gut, reducing the amount absorbed. This effect is dose-dependent and timing-dependent: more matcha consumed closer to an iron-rich meal means greater potential inhibition.
Haem vs non-haem iron
Haem iron from meat and fish is absorbed through a different pathway and is much less affected by polyphenols. The concern is primarily relevant for people who rely heavily on plant-based iron: lentils, beans, leafy greens, fortified foods.

For most healthy adults with a varied diet, no. The effect is real but not dramatic enough to cause concern in people with normal iron stores. For those managing deficiency, timing matcha carefully is worthwhile.
