Qual é o melhor Matcha para comprar no Japão?

Which Matcha Is Best to Buy in Japan?

Which Matcha Is Best to Buy in Japan?

Japan offers something difficult to find elsewhere: fresh, high-quality matcha bought close to its source, often at prices that undercut what the same product costs imported. Knowing how to navigate the market makes a significant difference.

The main producing regions

Uji, Kyoto — the most famous matcha-producing area. Quality ranges enormously. Tourist-oriented products in busy Kyoto streets can be overpriced and mediocre; specialist tea shops in quieter areas are where the good purchases happen.

Yame, Fukuoka — less internationally famous than Uji but produces exceptional matcha, often at slightly lower prices. Worth seeking out if you are in Kyushu.

Nishio, Aichi — one of the largest producing regions. Quality ranges from commodity to excellent.

Where to buy

Specialist tea shops (chaya) in any of these regions offer the best selection and most knowledgeable staff. Department store basement food halls (depachika) in major cities are a reliable source of quality products. Avoid matcha packaged as obvious tourist souvenirs.

What to buy

For drinking straight at home, look for first-harvest ceremonial grade. For lattes or gifts, a high culinary grade works well and is more affordable. Pay attention to harvest season if visible — in Japan you are more likely to find fresher product than through international export.

How much to bring

Keep matcha in your carry-on if possible. A 30g tin is a manageable starting point; 100g if you drink it daily and have reliable storage at home.
