Matcha en cafeïnegevoeligheid: wie moet voorzichtig zijn

Matcha and Caffeine Sensitivity: Who Should Be Careful

Matcha is often positioned as a gentler alternative to coffee because of its L-theanine content. This is fair — the caffeine experience is genuinely smoother for most people. But gentler is not the same as caffeine-free, and people with caffeine sensitivity need to engage with that honestly.

How much caffeine is in matcha?

A standard serving (1.5–2g of powder) contains approximately 30–70mg of caffeine. Shade-grown, first-harvest ceremonial matcha tends toward the higher end. For context: a standard espresso shot contains 60–75mg; filter coffee, 80–120mg. Matcha is comparable to a lighter espresso drink.

Signs of caffeine sensitivity

  • Jitteriness or anxiety from one cup of coffee
  • Heart palpitations or rapid heartbeat after caffeine
  • Difficulty sleeping even after afternoon caffeine
  • Increased anxiety or irritability associated with tea or coffee

Does L-theanine make matcha safe for sensitive people?

It helps, but does not eliminate the concern. L-theanine reduces the anxiogenic effect and smooths the energy curve. For mildly sensitive people, this difference is often enough to make matcha comfortable where coffee is not. For significantly sensitive people, even matcha's moderated caffeine may cause symptoms.

Practical options

  • Start with a smaller amount — 1g rather than 2g
  • Drink it with food, which slows caffeine absorption
  • Avoid matcha after early afternoon
  • Consider hojicha as an evening alternative — very low caffeine
  • If symptoms persist, matcha may not be the right drink for you
