Matcha pour la concentration et les études : est-ce vraiment efficace ?

Matcha for Focus and Studying: Does It Actually Help?

The claim that matcha improves focus is one of the most consistent and well-supported in the matcha literature. Unlike many wellness claims, this one has a specific, documented mechanism — and real-world experience that aligns with the physiology.

The L-theanine and caffeine combination

Multiple peer-reviewed studies have examined the effect of L-theanine and caffeine in combination — the defining feature of matcha's pharmacological profile. Results are notably consistent:

  • The combination improves attention, reaction time, and working memory on cognitive tasks
  • It produces more sustained alertness than caffeine alone
  • It reduces the distractibility and anxiety that can accompany caffeine in isolation
  • It increases alpha brain wave activity — associated with relaxed alertness — while caffeine alone typically increases beta waves linked to anxious thinking

How this applies to studying

The practical implication: matcha supports the cognitive state most useful for studying — alert enough to process and retain information, calm enough not to be anxious or easily distracted. This is the opposite of the jittery, slightly anxious state that strong coffee can produce, which can actually impair the kind of focused, deep processing that studying requires.

The dose question

Research on L-theanine and cognition often uses doses of 100–400mg — more than a single cup of matcha provides (15–40mg per serving). However, observational evidence and widespread subjective experience suggests that lower doses are still meaningful, particularly with regular consumption.

Practical application

A cup of matcha 30 minutes before a study session allows full absorption of caffeine and L-theanine. Pair it with a small amount of food to reduce any stomach sensitivity. Do not rely on matcha to compensate for sleep deprivation — L-theanine and caffeine cannot offset the cognitive impairment of poor sleep.
