Hojicha ou matcha pour le sommeil : lequel est le mieux le soir ?

Hojicha vs Matcha for Sleep: Which Is Better at Night?

The comparison between hojicha and matcha for evening use comes down primarily to caffeine — though there are other factors worth considering if you are paying attention to sleep quality.

The caffeine comparison

Matcha: 30–70mg of caffeine per serving. With a half-life of five to seven hours, a cup at 8pm still has meaningful caffeine activity around 1–2am for most people.

Hojicha: 10–15mg of caffeine per cup. At this level, the impact on sleep is minimal for most people — though truly caffeine-sensitive individuals may notice even this modest amount.

The practical conclusion: hojicha is the clear winner for evening use, by a significant margin.

L-theanine and sleep

Both contain L-theanine, associated with relaxation and mild sleep-supportive effects. Matcha's L-theanine content is higher due to shading — but this is largely negated by the much higher caffeine also present. In hojicha, L-theanine is present in smaller amounts but is not counteracted by significant caffeine. The net effect of hojicha is calming.

What happens if you drink matcha at night?

For caffeine-tolerant people: probably nothing notable. For caffeine-sensitive people: difficulty falling asleep, lighter sleep, more night waking, tired mornings. Even for tolerant people, caffeine reduces deep slow-wave sleep even when it does not prevent sleep onset — the quality cost may not be apparent even if duration is unaffected.

The recommendation

Hojicha is unambiguously the better choice for evenings. Its flavour — roasted, warm, nutty — is also well-suited to a wind-down context in a way matcha's fresh, vegetal character is not. Matcha is best consumed before early afternoon; hojicha shines as an evening ritual.
