Kann Matcha krank machen? Nebenwirkungen und wer vorsichtig sein sollte

Can Matcha Make You Sick? Side Effects and Who Should Be Careful

For most people, matcha at one to two cups per day causes no adverse effects. However, several side effects are worth knowing about, particularly for those who overconsume or have specific health conditions.

Caffeine-related effects

Matcha contains 30–70mg of caffeine per serving. For caffeine-sensitive people this can cause jitteriness, heart palpitations, anxiety, or sleep disruption — particularly if consumed in the afternoon. These effects are dose-dependent.

Digestive discomfort

Some people experience nausea or stomach upset when drinking matcha on an empty stomach. Drinking it with a small amount of food typically resolves this.

Liver concerns at very high intake

There are documented rare cases of liver damage associated with very high amounts of green tea extract supplements. Matcha consumed as a beverage at normal amounts has not been linked to liver issues in healthy individuals. The risk is associated with concentrated supplement forms, not regular tea drinking.

Lead content

Tea plants absorb lead from soil. Because matcha involves consuming the whole leaf, exposure potential is higher than brewed tea. Matcha from reputable Japanese producers is generally tested and within safe limits. Unknown sources or regions with higher soil contamination are a greater concern.

Who should be cautious

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding people — moderate caffeine intake
  • People with anxiety disorders — caffeine can exacerbate symptoms
  • Those managing iron-deficiency anaemia — see the iron absorption article
  • Those on blood thinners — EGCG can interact with some medications
  • People with liver conditions

One to two servings daily is safe for most healthy adults. Most side effects are dose-related and resolve with moderation.
