The Health Benefits of Hojicha: What Is Actually Worth Knowing

The Health Benefits of Hojicha: What Is Actually Worth Knowing

Hojicha exists at an interesting point in the wellness conversation. It is a roasted Japanese green tea with a warm, toasty character and notably low caffeine content. It is often described in the same terms as matcha, with sweeping claims about antioxidants, digestion, and stress reduction. Some of these claims have a reasonable basis. Others do not. The distinction is worth making.

What Roasting Does to the Leaf

Hojicha is made from bancha or kukicha, later-harvest green tea stems and leaves, which is roasted at high temperatures. This roasting process is what creates its characteristic flavour: warm, nutty, slightly caramelised, with almost no astringency. It also significantly reduces the caffeine content, as caffeine is volatile and partially lost during roasting.

The same roasting that reduces caffeine also reduces some of the polyphenol content that is often cited in health claims about green tea. Hojicha contains antioxidants, but at lower concentrations than unroasted green tea. Claims that present hojicha as being particularly high in antioxidants are oversimplified at best.

What Is Genuinely Useful to Know

The low caffeine content is real and significant. A cup of hojicha typically contains less than 10mg of caffeine compared to 35 to 70mg in a serving of ceremonial matcha. This makes it a genuinely suitable option for anyone who wants a warm drink in the evening without affecting sleep, for people sensitive to caffeine, and for children or pregnant women who choose to limit caffeine intake.

Hojicha also contains pyrazines, aromatic compounds formed during the roasting process. Pyrazines are associated with the characteristic warmth and depth of roasted foods and drinks, and there is some evidence that they may have mild relaxing effects, though this research is preliminary.

What We Sell and Where It Comes From

Our Organic Hojicha is sourced from Shizuoka, Japan, certified organic, and roasted to produce the warm, smooth cup that makes hojicha worth drinking in its own right, not as a substitute for anything else. It is sourced and sold with the same transparency we apply to our matcha: full origin, production method, and no exaggerated claims.
