GLP-1 — glucagon-like peptide-1 — has become one of the most discussed hormones in health and wellness, largely because of the rise of GLP-1 receptor agonist medications. Whether food can naturally influence GLP-1 has followed close behind. Matcha appears in this conversation regularly.

What is GLP-1?

GLP-1 is an incretin hormone released by the intestines in response to food. It stimulates insulin secretion, suppresses glucagon, slows gastric emptying, and signals satiety to the brain — all effects that support blood sugar control and appetite regulation.

What does matcha contain that might matter?

Matcha is rich in EGCG, a catechin studied for multiple metabolic effects. Several studies have looked at whether EGCG affects GLP-1 secretion or stability:

  • Animal studies show EGCG can stimulate GLP-1 secretion from intestinal cells.
  • Human studies on green tea extract have found modest improvements in blood sugar regulation markers, possibly partly mediated through GLP-1 pathways.

What the evidence does not yet show

The connection is biologically plausible — not yet established.

Can matcha mimic GLP-1 medications?

No. GLP-1 receptor agonist medications work through direct receptor binding at pharmacological doses. Any influence matcha compounds might have on GLP-1 pathways operates at a completely different scale. Suggesting matcha does what Ozempic does is not supported by evidence.

The honest summary

Regular matcha consumption may offer modest support for blood sugar regulation and metabolic health within a balanced diet. It is a meaningful addition to a healthy routine — not a medical intervention.
