Comprare matcha in Portogallo: cosa cercare e cosa evitare

Buying Matcha in Portugal: What to Look For and What to Avoid

Interest in matcha in Portugal has grown consistently over the last few years, and the market has responded accordingly. You can now find matcha in supermarkets, pharmacies, health food shops, and dozens of online retailers. The problem is that quality varies enormously, and the labelling often does not tell you what you need to know to tell the difference.

What You Will Find in Supermarkets

The matcha available in most Portuguese supermarkets is culinary grade, designed for use in cooking, baking, and mixed drinks. It is produced from later-harvest, unshaded leaves, ground to a fine powder, and sold at a price point that reflects its lower production cost. Prepared as a drink without sweetener or milk, it is bitter and astringent, which is why it is designed to be mixed with other things.

This is not bad product for its intended purpose. It simply is not ceremonial grade matcha, and using it as if it were produces a cup that gives people an inaccurate impression of what matcha actually tastes like.

What to Look for Wherever You Buy

Regardless of where you are shopping, the indicators of genuine ceremonial grade matcha are the same: a specified origin at the prefecture or town level, a named cultivar, a clear grade statement, the harvest season, and a harvest year. A price that reflects the cost of producing what the label claims, typically above €20 for 20g, is also a useful signal.

Why Portuguese Online Retailers Are Worth Considering

Buying from a Portuguese-based retailer has practical advantages beyond the obvious shipping speed. There are no customs complications within the EU, no unexpected import charges, and the ability to contact the seller directly in a shared language with a shared understanding of local consumer expectations.

We source our matcha directly from producers in Yame and Wazuka and ship across Portugal and Spain from Lisbon. Our full range includes A-Grade ceremonial matcha, single-cultivar options, and organic hojicha, all with full origin and harvest specification. Free shipping on orders above €40.
