¿Qué es un soporte para chasen? ¿Realmente lo necesitas?

What Is a Chasen Holder? Do You Actually Need One?

The chasen holder — known in Japanese as a kusenaoshi — is a dome-shaped ceramic or plastic stand designed to hold a matcha whisk between uses. It is a common item in matcha tool sets, but its necessity is debated among practitioners.

What it does

A bamboo chasen, when not in use, will flatten or lose its curved shape if stored laying on its side or resting on the tines. The holder keeps the tines elevated and maintains the dome shape that makes whisking effective. Over time, a chasen stored correctly on a holder maintains its form longer and lasts more uses than one stored improperly.

Do you actually need one?

For occasional matcha drinkers — a few times a week — the difference is modest. A chasen used and dried carefully after each session will last months without a holder. For daily drinkers who want their whisk to last a year or more and maintain peak performance, a holder is worth having. It is a small purchase that pays for itself.

How to care for your chasen without a holder

  • After each use, rinse thoroughly in warm water — no soap
  • Gently shake out excess water
  • Stand it upright — tines up — on a dry surface or in a cup with the handle down
  • Allow to dry completely before storing
  • Never store in an enclosed container while damp

When to replace the chasen

Replace when tines begin breaking off in significant numbers, when the bamboo develops a musty smell despite cleaning, or when it no longer creates adequate foam. Used daily, a good chasen lasts three to six months; used a few times weekly, it can last a year or more.
