Matcha en Lisboa: donde la cultura del café de la ciudad está cambiando

Matcha in Lisbon: Where the City's Coffee Culture Is Changing

Lisbon has a deep, proud coffee culture — one of the strongest in Europe. The matcha latte might seem like an unlikely fit in a city where the bica is an institution. But matcha has found a genuine foothold, and the city's speciality coffee scene has been the vehicle for it.

How it arrived

Matcha's arrival in Lisbon followed the same path it took in other European cities: through the speciality coffee community. Cafes investing in high-quality, origin-focused coffee found that the same customers were asking for matcha. The overlap between quality-conscious coffee drinkers and matcha drinkers is significant — both communities value provenance, preparation craft, and the experience of a well-made drink.

The current scene

Lisbon's matcha scene is concentrated in the neighbourhoods where speciality coffee is strongest — Príncipe Real, Santos, Mouraria, and parts of Alfama. These cafes have moved beyond the pre-mixed sweetened powders that characterised the first wave of matcha in Portugal, toward ceremonial grade powder prepared with proper technique.

Japanese-inspired cafes and tea rooms have also contributed to raising the standard, bringing a more culturally grounded approach to matcha preparation and presentation.

The home market

Alongside the cafe scene, a home matcha market has developed in Lisbon and across Portugal. Portuguese online retailers have expanded their matcha offerings, and health food stores in Lisbon now carry a wider range of quality products than they did five years ago.

What this means for matcha drinkers in Lisbon

Both the cafe and home supply options are better than they have ever been. Quality ceremonial matcha is genuinely accessible in Lisbon — at the right cafes and through the right retailers. The knowledge to make the right choices has become part of the cultural landscape alongside the product itself.
