¿El matcha es realmente más saludable que el café?

Is Matcha Actually Healthier Than Coffee?

Is Matcha Actually Healthier Than Coffee?

The comparison between matcha and coffee usually positions matcha as the superior choice. The reality is more nuanced — both have genuine benefits, different profiles, and suit different people.

Caffeine

A cup of coffee contains 80–150mg of caffeine. A serving of matcha contains 30–70mg. Coffee delivers more caffeine — stronger stimulant effect, higher likelihood of jitteriness for sensitive individuals. Matcha's caffeine is accompanied by L-theanine, which modifies the experience: less spike, less crash, more sustained focus. This is a real pharmacological difference, not marketing.

Antioxidants

Both are significant antioxidant sources. Coffee's come primarily from chlorogenic acids and is actually one of the largest antioxidant sources in Western diets. Matcha is particularly rich in EGCG. The profiles are different, not one clearly superior.

Acidity and digestion

Coffee is acidic and can cause or worsen acid reflux in susceptible people. Matcha is less acidic and generally better tolerated, though it can cause nausea in some people without food.

Sleep and anxiety

Coffee's higher caffeine and faster absorption make it more likely to disrupt sleep and exacerbate anxiety. Matcha's L-theanine partially mitigates the anxiety component and the lower caffeine makes it easier to time appropriately.

Which is healthier?

This is the wrong frame. Both can be part of a healthy lifestyle. For people managing anxiety, acid reflux, or sleep issues, matcha may be the more comfortable choice. For people who need a strong immediate alertness boost, coffee is more effective. Neither is mandatory, and neither is harmful in reasonable amounts for healthy adults.
