¿Se puede tomar matcha por la noche?

Can You Drink Matcha at Night?

The short answer: probably not a good idea for most people. The more useful answer involves understanding why, and what the alternatives are.

The caffeine problem

Matcha contains 30–70mg of caffeine per serving with a half-life of five to seven hours. A cup at 9pm still has meaningful caffeine active in your system at 2am. Even when caffeine does not prevent sleep onset, it can reduce deep sleep — the restorative slow-wave stage — without you being aware of it.

Does L-theanine help?

L-theanine has mild sleep-supportive effects in some studies and is associated with relaxation. However, it does not counteract caffeine's sleep-disrupting effects sufficiently to make evening matcha a good habit. Matcha delivers both together; the caffeine wins for sleep purposes.

Who might be an exception

People who are very caffeine-insensitive — those who can drink espresso at 10pm and sleep soundly — are less likely to be affected. This is a minority, and worth testing carefully rather than assuming.

What to drink in the evening instead

Hojicha is the natural answer. Made from the same plant as matcha but roasted, it is naturally very low in caffeine — 10–15mg per cup versus 30–70mg for matcha. Its warm, nutty, slightly sweet flavour is well-suited to winding down. It is the standard evening tea in Japan, specifically because of its low caffeine content.
