Il Matcha può causare bassa ferritina? Assorbimento del ferro e tè

Can Matcha Cause Low Ferritin? Iron Absorption and Tea

The relationship between tea and iron absorption is well-established in nutrition science. Tannins and catechins bind to non-haem iron in the digestive tract, reducing its absorption. Whether this translates to lower ferritin depends on several factors.

What matcha contains that affects iron

Matcha contains catechins — particularly EGCG — which chelate iron in the gut. Because matcha involves consuming the whole leaf rather than a brewed infusion, the concentration of these compounds is higher than in most teas.

Is this a real concern?

For most healthy adults eating a varied diet that includes haem iron (meat and fish), the impact is unlikely to be clinically significant. It becomes more meaningful for:

  • People already iron-deficient or with low ferritin
  • Vegetarians and vegans who rely on non-haem iron
  • Those with conditions affecting iron absorption
  • Those drinking matcha in large quantities with every meal

How to minimise the effect

The inhibitory effect is greatest when matcha is consumed with or immediately after iron-rich meals. Drinking matcha between meals substantially reduces the impact. Consuming vitamin C with iron-rich meals enhances non-haem absorption and can offset any tea-related reduction.

Should you stop drinking matcha?

Not necessarily — but timing matters. If managing low iron, time matcha away from main meals and discuss with a doctor or dietitian. It is also worth considering whether low ferritin has another cause entirely; tea is rarely the primary driver.
