Mikä matchajauhe sopii parhaiten latteen?

Which Matcha Powder Is Best for Lattes?

The matcha you use for lattes does not need to be the same as what you drink straight. Milk changes the requirements — both for flavour and dissolution.

Why grade matters less for lattes

When you drink matcha straight, every nuance of the powder is on full display. Bitterness, flatness, and off-flavours are immediately apparent. In a latte, milk masks or softens many of those nuances. The natural sweetness of ceremonial matcha is less necessary because milk adds its own. This means mid-range ceremonial or premium culinary grade is often the most sensible choice for lattes — less expensive than top-tier ceremonial, but better than commodity culinary.

What to look for

  • Colour — bright, vivid green. Even for latte use, dull or brownish matcha has oxidised.
  • Fineness — finer powder dissolves more easily, less graininess in the drink.
  • Flavour — taste it straight. Should be strong and somewhat bitter without milk, but not aggressively so.
  • Ingredients — matcha only. Sweetened blends are not what you want.

Is ceremonial grade worth it for lattes?

Yes, if you want the best result and do not mind the cost. Ceremonial grade creates a sweeter, more complex latte even with milk. No, if you are making batch lattes or sharing with people who will not notice the difference — use a good mid-range powder.

How much to use

A standard matcha latte uses 1.5–2g dissolved in 40–50ml hot water, then topped with 150–200ml steamed or cold milk. Some prefer a stronger ratio — 2g in 30ml — for a more matcha-forward flavour that holds up against a full cup of milk.
