Milloin juoda hojichaa: onko ilta todella paras?

When to Drink Hojicha: Is Evening Really Best?

When to Drink Hojicha: Is Evening Really Best?

Hojicha has an established reputation as the evening tea — the Japanese equivalent of chamomile, positioned as a wind-down drink. That reputation is largely deserved, but the full picture of when hojicha works best is more nuanced.

Why hojicha suits the evening

The primary reason hojicha is associated with evenings is its very low caffeine content. Roasted Japanese green tea contains approximately 10–15mg of caffeine per cup, compared to 30–70mg for matcha and 80–120mg for coffee. This low caffeine comes from the roasting process, which breaks down caffeine in the older leaves used. The result is a warming, flavourful drink that does not meaningfully disrupt sleep for most people.

Is it suitable at other times?

Yes, entirely. Hojicha is appropriate any time you want something warm and satisfying without a significant caffeine load:

  • In the afternoon when you want a break without more stimulation
  • After meals — the nutty, slightly smoky flavour complements food
  • In the morning for those who are caffeine-sensitive but want a warm ritual drink
  • For children and elderly people who need to moderate caffeine

The morning question

Hojicha in the morning is a perfectly valid choice. If you want energy from your morning drink it will not deliver the way matcha does — but if you want warmth, flavour, and ritual without caffeine-dependence, it is excellent. Many people drink matcha in the morning for focus and hojicha in the afternoon or evening for ritual without the stimulant.

Hot or cold?

Hojicha works well both hot and cold. Hot hojicha in winter, cold-brewed or iced hojicha in summer. The roasted, nutty, slightly sweet flavour adapts well to both temperatures.
