Kuinka säilyttää ja hoitaa matcha-vispilääsi

How to Store and Care for Your Matcha Whisk

A quality bamboo chasen is a handcrafted tool made from a single piece of bamboo, with up to 120 individually split tines. Treated correctly, it lasts months to years. Treated poorly, it deteriorates quickly and loses its ability to create the foam that defines a well-made matcha.

Before use: hydrating the chasen

Place the chasen in a bowl of warm water for 20–30 seconds before use. This softens the bamboo tines and makes them more flexible, reducing the risk of breakage during whisking. When warming the chawan with hot water first, dip the chasen into that same water — this accomplishes both tasks simultaneously.

After use: rinsing

Immediately after whisking, rinse the chasen under warm running water. Use your fingers to gently work any matcha residue off the tines. Do not use soap — it dries out the bamboo and leaves a flavour residue. Never put a chasen in a dishwasher. The heat and mechanical action will destroy it.

Drying

After rinsing, gently shake out excess water. If you have a chasen holder, place it there. If not, stand it upright — tines facing up — and allow to dry completely in a ventilated spot. Do not store while damp — moisture retained in the bamboo encourages mould and accelerates deterioration.

Storage

Once dry, store in its original packaging, on a holder, or standing upright in a dry container. Avoid enclosed, humid environments.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Multiple tines have broken off and foam quality has declined
  • The bamboo has developed a musty or mouldy smell
  • Tines have permanently flattened and no longer create the dome shape
  • Visible mould on the handle or tines
